Creating a Sustainable Space

Sustainable landscaping for commercial development

When it comes to the landscaping of commercial spaces, such as office parks or new housing and business developments, you want to put your best foot forward and showcase beautiful and inviting landscaping. After all, it is the first impression your buyers or customers will have of your project. Turn heads with these sustainable landscaping tips.

Back to Basics

When designing for commercial spaces, we like to think about what people walking and driving by will take notice of. Incorporating a variety of native trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses, providing a variety of forms, textures, and seasonal color is something we focus on. The most recent research also indicates that choosing to use native plants is one of the most important criteria for creating an eco-friendly landscape. Native plants are incredibly durable, meaning less water and fewer chemicals. Native plants not only help create a healthy local environment, but they also allow the space to feel more natural. They will also contribute to local biodiversity, supporting a harmonious ecosystem that fits right into our local community. The charm of local, sustainable fauna is something everyone can appreciate.

Eco-Friendly Design

At Habitat Guild, we use locally sourced materials and plants, minimizing the environmental impact of your project and leading to a more sustainable space. We create rainwater harvesting systems and smart irrigation techniques to make sure we are conserving water and using as little as necessary. When creating your space, we will combine hardscapes and green spaces when appropriate. This blends visual appeal with functionality; all while promoting efficiency and sustainability.

Mulch

The use of mulch is critical for the health of any landscape. Depending on the application, we like to use either shredded cedar mulch or finely chipped wood chips (sometimes referred to as ‘Pathway mulch’) in our builds. Both retain moisture in the soil, keep weeds away, and insulate plants from the extreme hot and cold temperature swings that are typical in Colorado. However, each has distinct benefits: shredded cedar is better for exposed windy sites, where fine wood chips have a better potential for helping to build soil. Mulch is versatile, with applications in vegetable and ornamental type gardens, as well as around newly planted trees. There’s a lot to consider in choosing the right mulch, but we listen to your project needs and will select the right mulch for your job.
